A journalist from Kobani wins an international award for a documentary film

Syrian Kurdish journalist Mustafa Al-Ali, along with the BBC Documentary Film Team, won the British BAFTA 2024 award, the ceremony of which was held at the Royal Opera House in London.

Al-Ali, a journalist from the city of Kobani in northern Syria, told ASO News Network that he and his team won the award for the documentary that deals with the journey of the British Shamima Begum, who joined ISIS when she was fifteen years old.

Begum (of Bangladeshi parents) was one of three female students from east London who traveled to Syria via Turkey to join ISIS in February 2015.

The journalist pointed out that the film was filmed in various areas of North-East Syria over a period of three years, pointing out that it sheds light on a region that suffered greatly from the terrorist organization, and was a starting point for forming an international coalition to fight ISIS.

Mustafa expressed his happiness at receiving the award, which is considered one of the highest and most prestigious awards.

The award is awarded by the British Academy of Film Arts for outstanding works in British and international television and film.

Al-Ali said that this coronation represents the role of Kurdish journalists within international teams and their ability to produce films that reach the world and be honored in one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world.

Since 2008, the ceremonies have been held at the Royal Opera House, and these awards, which constitute the British version of the American Oscars, are a prestigious platform for recognizing outstanding talent in the field of film and television.

BAFTA was founded in 1947, and later became the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, BAFTA is supported by over 6,500 members, representing various aspects of the film, television and video game industries.
