Varying damage to agricultural crops in Al-Darbasiyah countryside as a result of storms and hail

Villages between Al-Darbasiyah and Serêkaniyê/Ras al-Ain (eastern) countryside suffered varying damage to agricultural crops, as a result of rainstorms and hail that fell on the area on Sunday night.

The damage included crops such as cumin, barley, wheat, beans and onions, according to farmers from the area.

Farmer Aziz Sido, one of those whose agricultural crops were affected by the storms, told ASO News Network that the agricultural crops in the villages of (Torat, Bir Kiness Sharqi, Sherik, and Malak) are considered the most affected than others.

Aziz specifies rates of damage to agricultural crops in the region, but according to his opinion, they are estimates based on farmers’ experience (without official figures from agriculture yet). He says and quotes farmers that the rate of damage to the cumin crop in the village of Al-Ghanamiya may reach 40 percent, while The coriander yield in the village of “Jatal” may reach 50 percent, confirming, citing agricultural engineers, that the sunny weather in the coming days may help determine the damage more accurately.

In the same context, farmer “Nahed Mohammad Issa” says that noticeable damage to crops appeared in the villages of (Qarmani, Shaamsour, Ber kaveri, Sebirka, Gurkound, Mabrouka, Shafqat, Kairwuan, Bir kness, Alia, Dahr al-Arab, Dalik, Malak, Salam Alik, and Karbashk), and he adds that the damage to crops in those villages is less than in others. The extent of damage to barley crops is estimated at 60 percent, coriander at 30 percent, and wheat at 40 percent.

Farmers said that the damage rate in their villages may not have exceeded between 4 and 10 percent.

Meanwhile, farmers from Malak village estimated that the damage to the barley crop may have reached 90 percent, while they estimated the damage to the coriander crop to be between 70 and 80 percent.

The joint head of the Directorate of Agriculture in Al-Darbasiyah, Mazhar Maami, explained to ASO Network that the follow-up committees conduct the necessary examinations to determine the damage rates officially and accurately.
