Tishreen Dam goes out of service due to malfunctions and fuel shortages amid military clashes
Tishreen Dam went out of service completely this morning, Thursday, December 12, 2024, due to major malfunctions in the turbines and a shortage of diesel, amid ongoing clashes between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the factions of the National Army loyal to the Turkish occupation, around the dam.
A special source in the Euphrates Dam confirmed to ASO News Network that the dam completely stopped generating electricity at 10 am, which caused a power outage in Kobani, Manbij and their countryside, which depend on the dam to supply them with electricity.
The source indicated the difficulty of accurately estimating the extent of the damage due to the interruption of communication with workers inside the dam.
Tishrin Dam workers indicated through appeals they launched on social media that the building suffers from severe damage, as the equipment was flooded, the electrical cables fell, and there is a severe shortage of fuel needed to operate the turbines.
The workers appealed to the concerned authorities, including the Syrian Red Crescent, to deliver the necessary equipment and materials to repair and restart it, and to rescue the workers trapped in the dam urgently as the dam has started to sink.
In a related context, the source in the Euphrates Dam explained that Tishrin Dam Lake does not pose a direct threat to the Euphrates Dam Lake as it is a regulatory lake, but the dam’s shutdown represents a major crisis as it is a vital institution that supplies the region with electricity and water and helps regulate the flow of water to the Euphrates Dam.
The cities of Kobani, Manbij and other areas are suffering from power and water outages, amid calls to neutralize the dam from the military conflict and restart it, and rescue the workers in the dam.
