The band of “Hakawati Al Furat” performed their theatrical shows for the second month in a row, choosing the western countryside of Deir Ezzor as the venue for the month’s performances.
The band performed plays targeting women under the title “Haneen”.
Theatrical action targeting women tries to emulate marginalized women in areas were recently taken out of ISIS control.
The troupe of “Hakawati Al Furat” began last month, with theatrical performances in Raqqa and Al Tapqqa, while this month chose Deir Ezzor.
The show, which lasted for more than an hour, was attended by more than 100 women.
According to Shahla Al-Said, the coordinator of Hakawati Al Furat Project, the content of the project mimics the reality of women in North and East Syria, and the injustices, customs and societal traditions of women, such as the marriage of minors and preventing them from pursuing their studies, in a theatrical narrative way that also touched on the injustice of ISIS against women.
“Haneen”, according to “Dahham Al-Sattam,” the theater director and official of the troupe of Al Hakawati, directed to women in the form of “women’s monodrama” and simulates their reality, in reference to the injustice inflicted on women, focusing on the issue of underage marriage.
Dahham added that the show touched the effects of alienation on the people and the repercussions of the violation of women in the family and society.
Dahham Al-Sattam said “the play, titled “Haneen,” embodies the story of a girl who was deprived of her childhood by marrying an old man after her father forced her to marry for money.”
“Al Sattam”, told the content of the play, that “the girl’s suffering began with the elderly man, “Abu Suleiman,” where “Haneen” was no more than a nurse and maid. “Haneen” was serving ” Abu Suleiman “for 10 years, until he died and left the little girl Haneen to contemplate those 10 years, which has been lost.”
The majority of the women present asked, “Who will replace haneen with her childhood?”
“Rama Al Hindi”, a member of the theater band said that the show is trying to establish women’s rights, and warn women not to accept the fates destroying their lives, and also a message to parents not to destroy the fate of young girls as “Haneen.”
Umm Shadi, a woman from Deir Ezzor, said the essence of the theater work benefited the audience and raised the alarm on the lives of girls whose fate is determined at an early age by their parents.
“The play has simulated the reality for women in the North and East of Syria,” says Umm Mohammad from Al Jazrat. “Extremism must be combated, and violations of women’s rights, including coercion to marry, not just underage marriages.”
“Umm Mohammed”, added that the play has an effective role in the dissemination of culture, “through those words that touched our hearts and we need such plays that simulate our reality.”
