The markets of Al-Jazira region are witnessing an unprecedented rise in the price of chicken at the beginning of the month of Ramadan, as the price of one kilogram of chicken has reached about 40 thousand Syrian pounds, which increases the financial burden on families with limited income.

Izz al-Din Younis, a resident of Tal Hajar in Hasakah, told Aso News Network: “The rise in chicken prices is unjustified. Before the rise, I could buy chickens once a week for my family, but now with the significant rise in prices, I can no longer buy them except once a month.” “The increase is huge and does not match my income.”

Younis suggests that people boycott chicken meat and not buy it for a week, which will lead to it being accumulated by merchants, which will force shop and poultry owners to reduce prices.

Fahima Mohammad, “a resident of Al-Nasirah neighborhood in Al-Hasakah,” attributes the reason for the rise in chicken prices before the month of Ramadan to the monopoly of merchants and the lack of oversight by the relevant authorities over the markets for selling chickens in the city.

Mohammad adds, “The insanely high prices will cause us to refrain from buying chicken meat, which is the appropriate meat resource for us as those with limited and medium incomes, especially in the holy month of Ramadan.”

Regarding the reasons for the high prices of chickens, Ismail Sino, a “chicken trader and poultry owner” in Al-Hasakah, says to Aso News Network: “The cost of raising broilers is high if we calculate the losses and death of some birds, as the cost of one kilogram of broilers is 28,500 Syrian pounds, while the price of supplies is It was set at 28,600 Syrian pounds, meaning that we only profit 100 Syrian pounds without taking into account the losses.”

Sino explains, “Shop owners buy one kilogram of chicken for 38 thousand Syrian pounds. Then they will be forced to sell one kilogram of chicken at a price ranging between 40 and 45 thousand Syrian pounds, which is a price that contradicts the supply price, and this is what prompted them to strike and stop sales operations.” And purchase.”

Ahmed Jadoua, “owner of a chicken shop,” attributes the reasons for the high price of chicken to the high exchange rate of the dollar against the Syrian pound, the absence of ration control, in addition to some merchants manipulating prices without any deterrent.

Pointing out the availability of live and imported broilers, in addition to the presence of poultry in the region. According to his opinion, the price of one kilogram should not exceed 25 thousand Syrian pounds.

Abdul Halim Ammar, “the joint head of the Consumer Protection Office” in North-East Syria, says to Aso News Network: “The reason for the high prices of chicken is due to the monopoly and exploitation of some merchants, and the increased demand for it with the advent of the holy month of Ramadan, as chicken shops stopped buying and selling operations.” A few days ago, in protest against the supply pricing, which set the price of one kilo at 28,600 Syrian pounds, and the failure of wholesalers to adhere to the price bulletin.

He explained that the Consumer Protection Office and the Supply Directorate determine prices according to the availability of goods and the stability of their prices from the source, but with their interruption or unavailability, prices change.
