Agricultural crops in North-East Syria were exposed to an unprecedented frost wave during the past days, causing major losses to farmers in several areas, including Amuda, Al-Mansoura countryside (20 km east of Tabqa), and Raqqa.

Abu Mohammad, a farmer from Amuda countryside, explained that the potato crop grown on an area of 100 dunums was severely damaged, as the expected production decreased from 4 tons per dunum to only between 1.5 and 2 tons as a result of the frost.

Mohammad Siddiq Abdo, another farmer, also confirmed that the cabbage and cauliflower crops that he grows on an area of 20 dunums have not been significantly affected so far, but he expressed his fears about the impact of the continuing frost waves, noting that potatoes were the most affected.

In the eastern countryside of Tabqa, low temperatures, which reached around zero, caused severe damage to greenhouses planted with tomatoes and cucumbers, according to what was reported by ASO News Network correspondent in Tabqa.

Farmers reported that the absence of heating means led to the damage of plants in about 40 greenhouses, demanding the provision of diesel fuel to support heating and prevent the recurrence of these large losses.

In the Raqqa countryside, Abu Ismail, a farmer from the village of Al-Khatuniya, pointed out that the frost caused damage to vegetable crops such as lettuce, beans, carrots, spinach, and cauliflower, as changes in color and obvious damage to the plants appeared.

Through ASO News Network, the farmers are calling on the concerned authorities to provide the necessary support, such as providing heating materials and protecting crops, in the hope that the rapid response will contribute to reducing losses and ensuring the continuation of agricultural production.
