In light of the increasing escalation in the Syrian coast, the Syrian Democratic Council issued a statement calling for the voice of reason to prevail and to stop the military confrontations that threaten civil peace, stressing that targeting civilians and local police officers is a “flagrant violation” that must be stopped immediately.

The council stressed that protecting the lives of Syrians, regardless of their affiliations, is an absolute priority, noting that the continuation of the cycle of violence serves the enemies of peace and harms the unity of the country, stressing the need to address the causes of tension through serious and responsible dialogue away from militarization and sectarian incitement, warning that escalation may deepen divisions and prolong the suffering.

The statement called on all Syrians to reject hate speech and work to protect the social fabric by building bridges of dialogue and understanding, stressing that the unity of Syrians and respect for diversity are the only way to restore stability.

The statement also called on the international community, especially the United Nations and the Security Council, to take a more serious stance, by issuing a binding resolution for a ceasefire and supporting a comprehensive political process. The statement stressed the importance of establishing a transitional justice mechanism to hold perpetrators of crimes accountable, in parallel with the national reconciliation process. The Syrian Democratic Council concluded its statement by emphasizing its commitment to working towards a just political solution that achieves peace and stability, away from wars and conflicts that have brought nothing but destruction and suffering to the Syrian people.
