Pomegranate orchards are abundant in Deir Al-Zour and its countryside, especially in the town of Al-Sausa in the eastern countryside, about 140 km from Deir Al-Zour, and about 9 km from Albukamal. They were connected by a wooden bridge, which was later converted into a large concrete bridge, but at the moment, part of this bridge is destroyed.

Pomegranate cultivation spread in the region and expanded, and Al-Sausa pomegranate became a distinctive brand and a popular variety in the market because of its known shape and taste, which is popular to people.

In the countryside of Sausa, there is a modern factory for making pomegranate juice and pomegranate molasses (Al-Morashid and Al-Akroub).

“Kasir Al-Shuhan ” from the people of the town of Sausa says that the juice of the pomegranate in the town of Sausa is characterized by a distinct flavor and its acidity is 50 percent (according to the packaging label from the factory) and its color is the same as the original color of the pomegranate seeds, that is pink red, and its density is high and it is not oxidizable

The agricultural engineer, “Mohamed El-Yassin,” says that the hot climate and the muddy soil of the city of Sausa helped planting pomegranate trees.

Pomegranate orchards are spread over an area of three thousand acres, in which about 150,000 pomegranate trees are planted, most of which are in the village of Al-Marashda. According to the statistics of farmers, the city produces more than 20 thousand tons of pomegranates annually.

According to the agricultural engineer, “Al-Yassin,” the Pomegranate of Sausa endures drought and thirst, and farmers resort to irrigation by flooding.

He added, that owners of pomegranate orchards prefer not to irrigate excessively during the ripening period, as this leads to cracking and damage of the fruit.
