The role of women declined significantly in Afrin after its occupation by Turkey and the Turkish-affiliated Syrian National Army factions.

The Turkish state brought in thousands of settlers from all over Syria and worked to settle them in Afrin to begin implementing their extremist ideas, which forbid women to work or leave the house.

Sources from Afrin confirmed the emergence of an extremist group of women who called themselves (Habibat Allah), whose mission is to pass by the shops and centers where Kurdish women work and invite them to wear the legal dress and the need to go out with a mahram, and consider everyone who does not follow these instructions an infidel and an atheist.

On the other hand, the Supreme Commission for Syrian Kurds organized a shy celebration in Afrin on the occasion of International Women’s Day, in which some settlement women and some of the Commission’s women participated, in one of the wedding halls in Afrin.

One of the women present spoke to Aso News Network, saying: “The woman in Afrin, before its occupation, was able to prove herself and excel in many fields, and she received support in various fields, including art and theater, but after the control of the Turkish-backed factions, the role of women was marginalized, and she lost many businesses. and professions, to allow them to work in accordance with their dark, extremist ideas.”

Afrin women have been subjected to many crimes and violations by armed factions, including killing, kidnapping, torture and enforced disappearance, and the fate of many of them is still unknown.

It is worth noting that women in Afrin had managed to prove their presence in various scientific, cultural, artistic, professional and political fields, but this role declined and almost disappeared 4 years ago until now, after the occupation of the city.
